Were You a Sporty Kid?

In yoga class this weekend, my friends reminisced about what sporty kids they once were. From soccer to track and field, all of these active women were once active youngsters. On the opposite side of the coin was me – while I was as active as the next kid when it came to running around outside, I never got involved in sports, and I never wanted to. [...]

Make Ballpark Food Work For You

Something happened between the confusion I was having over pinch hitting a few weeks ago and now – I became a San Francisco Giants fan. For longtime fans: lame, I know. I’m like one of those people who only shows up to church on Easter or Christmas. But for me, it’s exciting. [...]

Athletes Go Naked For ESPN’s Annual Body Issue

Get excited, because it’s that time of year again: ESPN The Magazine is out with its Body Issue, featuring photos of well-known athletes in the buff. I look forward to the issue every year; the photos are a pretty stunning representation of athletic prowess.
Like last year’s issue, there are multiple covers to choose from that include Diana Taurasi (2009 WNBA MVP) and the USA Women’s Polo team, and plenty of shots inside of athletes like Julia Mancuso and Evan Lysacek. [...]

Get Warmed Up For the US Open

This weekend, we heard the shocking news that Serena Williams will not play in this year’s US Open as she recovers from surgery on her foot. The star, who won her 13th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, injured her appendage on broken glass at a restaurant.

Interestingly, Serena was fined at last year’s US Open for unsportsmanlike conduct, and she could have been banned from playing this year if she had incurred another “major offense” in a Grand Slam tourney. [...]

Do You Believe the Lance Armstrong Doping Allegations?

When Floyd Landis (the cyclist stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title for doping) publicly accused Lance Armstrong of using performance-enhancing drugs, I dismissed it as jealousy on the part of Landis. The accusations were made a few months ago during the Tour of California, and Lance denied any wrongdoing. [...]

Speak Up: How Do You Deal With Competition Envy?

I’m not sure that “competition envy” is a real, defined term, but after seeing signs posted all over town about this weekend’s San Francisco marathon, I’m certainly experiencing it! Months ago, I toyed with the idea of running, but a perfect storm of injury and a busy schedule left me with not enough time to prepare. [...]
