Healthy Fat: How Much Is Too Much?

We are pumped to share one of our fave stories from Self here on FitSugar!
We used to assume that fat was fat. Now, most of us know that while some fats are terribly bad for us, others are actually quite healthy!
That’s great news, but here’s our question: If most of our fat is coming from healthy fats (monounsaturated, polyunsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids), how much is too much? Is it possible to overdo it?
According to registered dietician Willow Jarosh, a contributing editor at SELF and co-founder of C&J Nutrition, most women need about 30 percent of their total daily calories to come from fat – no matter what type of fat it may be. [...]

Keep Fresh Fruit, Not Flowers, on the Table

As much as I love fresh flowers, and I do love fresh flowers, they are apparently not the best home décor decision for someone trying to lose a few pounds. Instead, Dr. Oz says that a fruit-filled centerpiece is the optimal choice. According to his ultimate slim-down plan, “Studies have indicated that people who smelled fruit before a meal lost an average of 30 pounds over the course of six months. [...]

Smarter Eats: Meat Safety

Veggies and grains take up most of the real estate on my meal plates, but when it comes to protein, I enjoy the lean varieties of fish and chicken. But I am no stranger to beef and pork, either. Though I make my best effort to shop with a grocery list, I can end up at the supermarket without a game plan and eyes bigger than my stomach. [...]

Smarter Eats: When Dining Out, Get Grilling

Dining out is a great way to try new foods, hang out with friends, and take a break from cooking. It can also be an easy way to put a glitch in a healthy diet. Many restaurant dishes are laden with hidden calories from butter and oil, which isn’t always clear when you order the fish or salad. [...]

Smarter Eats: Eat Snacks Off a Plate, Not From a Package

I’m in the midst of a snacking revelation. Instead of eating Ben & Jerry’s ice cream straight from the container, I’ve been putting it in a bowl. Total game changer. I know that you’re probably thinking, “Big deal, Fit. Most people eat out of bowls!” But when it comes to snacks, a lot of people do eat straight from the container. [...]

Make Baked Goods Healthier With Whole Grains

This weekend was all about baking. My stand mixer was in constant rotation as I made pizza dough, bread, cookies, and pie crust. And while I can’t get enough of baked goods made with whole grains, the mister is not a fan. To avoid a showdown in the kitchen, I’ve been mixing whole grain flour into everyday all-purpose flour. [...]

Skip the Whip, Top Desserts With Vanilla Yogurt Instead

I am eating as many berries as I can until Fall comes and takes them away from me. I love them in my yogurt and cereal, on top of waffles, and especially in desserts. And as much as I wished it wasn’t so, berries pair amazingly with fresh whipped cream. Always on the hunt for healthy food swaps, I’ve been trying to find ways to lighten up my use of heavy whipping cream, and once again Greek yogurt is the answer!

I fold in an equal amount of nonfat Greek yogurt to fresh whipped cream and let that sit overnight. [...]

Smarter Eats: Don’t Fill Your Whole Plate

While researching what diet trends emerged during the 1960s (aka the Mad Men era), I was struck with how portion size has steadily increased over the last 50 years. Almost all of the dinner plates I spotted in vintage ads, cookbooks, and commercials were the size of a modern-day appetizer or salad plate. [...]
